{"id":20,"date":"2020-05-25T22:25:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-26T02:25:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2020-06-11T18:16:40","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T22:16:40","slug":"vim-or-whats-old-is-new-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snowleopard.com\/index.php\/2020\/05\/25\/vim-or-whats-old-is-new-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Vim or &#8220;What&#8217;s old is new again&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since I began my professional career, I&#8217;ve been a fan and heavy user of the &#8220;vi&#8221; editor.\u00a0 I could always count on my editor to be available on every Unix system I used, and I never needed much time to update my personal configuration as I moved from system to system.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago, almost every one of my coworkers became obsessed with the Emacs editor (mostly GNU Emacs).\u00a0 At times, I seriously questioned just how much time people were investing into their Emacs Lisp libraries.\u00a0 I was just the odd duck and never one to follow the crowd.\u00a0 I was happy with my multi-modal editor which seemed to perplex many new users but that somehow I found relatively minimalist.<\/p>\n<p>As time went on, most vi editors have been replaced with\u00a0 Vim (&#8220;Vi IMproved&#8221;).\u00a0 I always stuck with the basic editor workflow and never dug much deeper.\u00a0 As Vim became more popular, it became available on almost every operating system you could think of and a &#8220;Vim mode&#8221; even began to become a common feature on many Integrated Development Environments (IDEs).<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/34.70.228.191\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/vim.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/34.70.228.191\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/vim.png\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"186\" data-original-width=\"185\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>With more time on my hands, and more mileage on my hands as well, I&#8217;ve decided to improve my mastery of Vim.\u00a0 Clearly, I&#8217;ve only scratched the surface of Vim&#8217;s commands and features, and my workflow could use some optimization.\u00a0 Hopefully, I can make some meaningful improvements to my software development process and reduce the amount of typing needed to accomplish the same tasks.
